چکیده

Cochlear implants are an accepted and effective treatment for restoring hearing sensation to people with severe-to profound hearing loss. Contemporary cochlear implants consist of a microphone, a sound processor, a transmitter, a receiver, and an electrode array that is positioned inside the cochlea. The sound processor is responsible for decomposing the input audio signal into different frequency bands and delivering information about each frequency band to the appropriate electrode in a base-to-apex tonotopic pattern. The bandwidths of the frequency bands are approximately equal to the critical bands, where lowfrequency bands have higher frequency resolution than high-frequency bands. The actual stimulation to each electrode consists of nonoverlapping biphasic chargebalanced pulses that are modulated by the low passfiltered output of each analysis filter. However, the improvement in speech perception necessitates a highly sophisticated way of processing the speech and coding to the auditory nerve fibers.

Toddlers' comprehension of degraded signals: Noise-vocoded versus sine-wave analogs.

Recent findings suggest that development changes the ability to comprehend degraded speech. Preschool children showed greater difficulties perceiving noise-vocoded speech (a signal that integrates amplitude over broad frequency bands) than sine-wave speech (which maintains the spectral peaks without the spectrum envelope). In contrast, 27-month-old children in the present study could recognize ...

Dynamic spectral structure specifies vowels for adults and children.

The dynamic specification account of vowel recognition suggests that formant movement between vowel targets and consonant margins is used by listeners to recognize vowels. This study tested that account by measuring contributions to vowel recognition of dynamic (i.e., time-varying) spectral structure and coarticulatory effects on stationary structure. Adults and children (four- and seven-year-o...

Perceptual organization of speech signals by children with and without dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a condition in which children encounter difficulty learning to read in spite of adequate instruction. Although considerable effort has been expended trying to identify the source of the problem, no single solution has been agreed upon. The current study explored a new hypothesis, that developmental dyslexia may be due to faulty perceptual organization of linguistically...

Predicting the intelligibility of vocoded speech.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a number of speech intelligibility indices in terms of predicting the intelligibility of vocoded speech. DESIGN Noise-corrupted sentences were vocoded in a total of 80 conditions, involving three different signal-to-noise ratio levels (-5, 0, and 5 dB) and two types of maskers (steady state noise and two-talker). Tone-voco...

Children weight dynamic spectral structure more than adults: evidence from equivalent signals.

Earlier work using sine-wave and noise-vocoded signals suggests that dynamic spectral structure plays a greater role in speech recognition for children than adults [Nittrouer and Lowenstein. (2010). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 127, 1624-1635], but questions arise concerning whether outcomes can be compared because sine waves and wide noise bands are different in nature. The current study addressed that...
